A Comic That Made You Cry | Day 16 of 31 DAYS OF COMICS!
Laika, written and drawn by Nick Abadzis, did not earn its tears cheaply. And in this episode, the latest installment of 31 Days of Comics, I talk a little bit about what the comic, with its unique blend of fact and fiction, asks us to examine.

Three recent reads happened to be writer-artist debuts, or at least breakthroughs, so in this episode I chat about Flake, by Matthew Dooley; Mr. Invincible, by Pascal Jousselin; and In, by Will McPhail, all of which are worth checking out. Hello there. I have a quick question as to what you mean by strong vacuum cleaner. I seen in comments you mentioned 2000 watts, but isn't that commercial vacuum cleaners that are around 500 dollars? Or do ya mean a regular strong vacuum? Would appreciate the help, want to get right vacuum cleaner, and perhaps not spend too much if possible.

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc 17 годин тому

      @@retro_cody_ definitely not anything in the 500 dollar range! Prices and models will vary across the world, but I'd say between 150 and 200 dollars would be expensive enough, and you may even find something cheaper that works as well. Essentially you want to pair a strong suction with a HEPA filter, and the best combination of those one can afford should be the goal.

      Yes, if you can see the wattage, that is the level where I saw a difference in effect. Mind you, this was some time ago (I still use the same vacuum cleaner, though) - perhaps newer tech means less wattage can do the same as more used to, if that makes sense?

    I had only one option for this. These feeling thingies are restricted to Finns by very tight annual quota from government. Overuse of emotions also leads to subtraction from the next years quota. This, of course, makes sense to anyone reading this. Having said that after last years health issues I realized it's all BS. And I just happened to read Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck. Scrooges journey from ambitious and happy youngster to cheap(and even bitter) person would have been enough for tear jerker. But it was the unexpectedly well crafted love story weaving it's way through it all that finally broke my cool. I learned to read with duck stories and those adventures are part of who I am. But I was never ready for the depth of emotions Don Rosa was able to bring to characters that I always considered "ready" and unchanging.

    Clumsy by Jeffrey Brown. The story of a long distance relationship disolving in front of my (and the protagonists) eyes. The futility of struggling to keep it together and the drawing style that deceived me to feel like the story was a diary that unravelled while I was reading were an unbearable slow motion punch in the face

    My answer lacks any of the poetry or analyse of your brilliant video, but is as honest an answer as I can think of. The end of Y the Last Man with Yorick and Ampersand saying goodbye had me in buckets, before I'd even read the rest of the series and then reading it again later at the end reading it all hit me even harder. If I hadn't used it already (I think) I'd have gone for the final Calvin and Hobbes strip as that one I cry at a perfect ending told beautifully. It fills me with all the joy of the time we shared together, its a real bitter sweet moment.

    • @ftloc

      The grape scene was definitely on the 'shortlist' for me! Oddly, the final Calvin and Hobbes strip didn't make me tear up, even as I knew it was ending in front of my eyes; and I have never quite put my finger on why. Maybe because I never thought of the strips as having a 'sequence' through time, so they have no beginning and no end? I need to think about that some more...

      Animals, like children, feel helpless and trusting I think, transferring any 'blame' outside of them. This lets stories use them as a stand in for innocence, which allows for built-in power coming from the reader's associations. The thing is, this can so easily be manipulated - by which I mean the author depending completely on what the reader brings with them. As I get older, that craft and skill distinction pleases me more! 😁

  • @bunkmastab
    @bunkmastab 6 днів тому

    This comic was not on my radar but after that beautiful summary about what I'm particular elicited an emotional reaction from you and how this transcends the "sad story about an animal" genre to use the animal as a focal point about the human decisions that went into it, LAIKA certainly is now. Thank you for this wonderful breakdown

    • @ftloc

      Thank you - so glad you enjoyed the video! This book has an interesting bifurcation amongst people who have not read it. Either they could think this is a only-for- kids, Disneyfied and sanitized version of the real story, or they could think it is a stream of constant misery and suffering. I'd been through both expectations myself, but why I really encourage people to seek it out and read it for themselves is because of complicated and complex it is in its questioning, while still being such clear and direct comics in its execution. If you ever get to take a look, I'd love to know what you thought of it.

    Angshuman I bought this comic on your recommendation and till date it remains one of the best comics that I have read. On the surface it seems that the trope of depicting atrocities on a mute animal is cliche and would elicit an easy emotional response. Truly an incredible read and I must thank you for recommending the same.

    Thank you for this! I am currently going through my 1-55 issues and I was wondering when the flip to Image Comics occurred. I am assuming Cartoon Books still published 21-27 concurrently with Image? As I have CB version of those issues as well?

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc 7 днів тому

      Glad you enjoyed it! I believe after the agreement with Image ended, Jeff Smith and CB reprinted 21-27 while picking up from 28, similar to the way Image had reprinted 1-20 when they started with 21. BUT I cannot now find any sources to confirm that, so it may well be that CB was publishing them parallel to Image, although I wonder if that wouldn't somehow defeat the purpose of tying up with Image for publishing (not just distribution) in the first place? Let me dig further! 😁

    I too lament the loss of “indomitable”. I always love giving a book to my nieces and then later hearing them using all the new words they've learnt.

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc 9 днів тому

      It really confuses me, this manner of thinking. "This word won't be known to kids, they'll encounter it later, in another book that isn't for kids and which assumes they know the word already from something else they've read"? Where, then, is the book that taught them that? Asterix and indomitable has long been my example of where it happens, and it feels unacceptable for me to have that erased.

    Cigars of the Pharaoh was not only my first Tintin book, but my first comic book, so I have extreme nostalgia goggles on for that story. But in truth, I'm not so much interested in the ranking itself as I am the discussion about each story and what it means to you. This was an absolute joy to watch.

    My mum had never read any comics, but when I was doing a write up for the best comics of the year, I had The Adoption on my tablet, and she picked it up out of curiosity and ended up reading the whole thing. It was great to see she could get into the medium when she found the right story. Have you read Aimée de Jongh's Days of Sand? It's a gorgeous book. She's also got an adaptation of Lord of the Flies coming out later this year.

    Well this is long past the time this will probably be seen but thought what the heck. You say in your video why mention this comic if its so hard to get hold of. Well 5 years after you made it, I'm catching up with old videos from before I discovered your channel (relatively recently) and this one really intrigued me. So as you suggested, you never know and made a note of Sparks. Few weeks later what pops up on eBay but a nice decently prices copy which I guess as its so obsure no one else was interested in and so got this for a relative song and it landed today. Not read it yet but looks super and just goes to show crafting videos like this really does have a positive impact. Even if I'm screaming into the void 5 years on just wanted to let ... well anyone who read this .. know!
